South Carolina Summits

On Dorie’s and my annual trip to the South Carolina beach, I noticed 2 summits I had not previously climbed.

The first, Isle of Palms High Point was actually right behind our condo. To make a hike out of it, I did the 3-mile loop around the island. This was a dangerous summit. The high point is between the 13th and 10th fairways of the Wild Dunes Golf Course. I had to cross the 13th to get there. Golf balls were flying 100 mph as I scooted across the fairway. The summit climb was 13 feet. Whew.

The next day’s summit was the High Point of Sullivan’s Island, south of the Isle of Palms. Prior to the summit I got caught in a torrential downpour with thunder and a lightning directly overhead. I got drenched. The high point is at the site of Fort Moultrie. An interesting historical site and one of the few US forts that has taken part in every battle between the Revolutionary War and World War II. Dorie made this summit with me, climbing the 5 feet without any problem.
