Turtle Mountains HP, Whipple Mountains HP, Chemehuevi Peak
Looking for some desert solitude I headed to the southeastern part of the Mojave desert. I found what I was looking for and more: 3 nights, 3 days, 3 sunsets, 3 sunrises, 3 bushwhacking peak ascents, 0 people, 5 burros, 1 fox, 1 bighorn that didn’t make it, wind, cold, total silence at times, numerousContinue reading “Turtle Mountains HP, Whipple Mountains HP, Chemehuevi Peak”
Year End Holiday trip – SoCal to New Mexico
For our holiday trip to Albuquerque, NM, we decided to drive from the southwestern corner of California to Albuquerque without using any freeways. According to Google Maps that added about 100 miles and 3.5 hours driving time.
Bavaria (Part 2), Oct. 2021
This is a continuation report of some hikes in Bavaria. Here is part 1.
Bavaria (Part 1), Oct. 2021
These are some hikes in the first mountains I ever saw and hiked over 50 years ago. Some of the hikes my cousin and I had done with our families way back then, some I had never done before. It was great to show this area to Srisuda and also my nephew.
McGee Pass, September 2021
Large fires and extreme fire danger again canceled a lot of September hiking in the Sierra. We were lucky to get a brief window with good conditions. On the drive up Owens Valley I had my doubts that the hike would happen. The valley was smoke-filled and we did not see any of the SierraContinue reading “McGee Pass, September 2021”
Piute Pass, July 2021
Looking for a new-to-us area of the Sierra with nice lakes and some interesting peaks I found Piute Pass.
Mount Langley, July 2021
It’s been a couple of years since any of us had been on a 14er and so it was time to get up there again. We chose Langley (14026 ft / 4275 m) since most in the group had not been up there, it’s the closest to home, and it’s easy to get to theContinue reading “Mount Langley, July 2021”
Kearsarge Peak, Horton Lakes, Mt. Morgan
The extreme multi-year drought continues and the snow levels for the southern Sierra only reached about 50% of normal. A side effect is that hiking at elevation is already possible in June.
San Gorgonio Summit Bivouac
Looking for some solitude I did a quick, last-minute hike up San Gorgonio with bivouac on the summit. This was something I always had wanted to do. Forecast conditions were favorable with no wind and lows around 50 F (10 C).
