Onyx Encore

Two days after Uwe and Srisuda snowshoed Onyx, Dorie and I decided to also give it a try. We were at the cabin, so it was an easy drive. This was Dorie first time snowshoeing so she borrowed some snowshoes from a friend. The day could not have been more perfect – clear blue sky, and 40 degrees. I thought we’d just find Uwe and Srisuda’s track and hike up. However, a group of 12-15 were coming down after camping the night at the upper PCT trail intersection. So, it was like a snowshoe track highway up to that intersection. The snow was a bit crunchy at the start but as the afternoon progressed, it became slushy with some bare spots caused by the rapid melting. We had beautiful clear views of San Gorgonio and of Baldwin Lake (now with water after the heavy rains). After a nice lunch on the mountain and watching the robins coming in for spring, it was an easy trip down the mountain. Looks like we’re in the shopping mode for snow shoes.
