Christmas in the desert 2017 – 4: Eureka Dunes, Death Valley

Continued from here…

Monday morning we continued on to the Eureka Dunes. Of course we had to climb to the top of these dunes, about 650ft (200m). We picked a route that we thought would give us the best chance with the least loose sand. We started on the northern side of the dunes climbing up ridges. At one point it looked like we’d have to give up almost all our elevation gain to get to a ridge leading up to the high point, but we were able to find a route avoiding that and made it the top with relative ease. After a short break for taking pics and snacking we collected the dividends of our effort and ran down the steep side of the dune in the deep sand.

The drive home was uneventful, except that traffic on Cajon pass added about 40 minutes to our drive.
