Ross Mountain via Mount Baden-Powell, August 3, 2019

I wanted to bag Ross Mountain for a while, but dreaded the up and over and back over Mount Baden-Powell. We needed another hike to get into Sierra season shape and were a little tired of our usual local higher elevation hikes. So Ross Mountain via Baden-Powell it was.

Above the Clouds, Monserate Mountain

Just a quick hike up Monserate Mountain for a little exercise. The weather conditions made it a little more interesting than usual. We started in fog and then climbed out of it to be above the clouds (marine layer). Not bad to get above the clouds with only having to climb up 1,250 ft. (Hike stats: 4.3 miles, 1250 ft gain)

Palomar Mountain

I wanted a training run and I wanted some elevation. I chose Palomar High point and wanted a 6AM start but instead overslept and got ~8AM start (bad idea). All I brought was my running vest, water and some snacks. It was hot the whole way! I made it up the Oak Grove Trail in 28 minutes and got to the summit in 1hr32min. I snapped a pic, ate some snacks and looked for my salt pills… I left them in the car! I started down, immediately started cramping, and consequently started cursing my own stupidity. I ran / walked through relentless cramps and finished car-to-car in 2hr50min. When I got back to my car the temp was 94 degrees! I’m going back for a better time…

Williamson and Tyndall – June 27-30

For the longest time I hadn’t decided if I was going to make it on this mountain climb. However, when I became quite depressed with my progress at chemistry and quite incensed with my collaborator, I decided I needed a weekend in the mountains. Also, my friend Nick was leading the climb and I needed to get to the top of Tyndall anyways. Wednesday night I packed my gear and intended to only work half a day Thursday. Chemistry is awful. I managed to escape the Sadness Factory around 3PM, got to Paige’s house and met up with Brett to carpool to Lone Pine. We stopped off at a Chick-fil-A and I discovered little packets of jam. I thought they could be new Gu packs but was disappointed to find that they only had 40 Calories. At any rate, it turns out that they are great in oatmeal. The drive was uneventful and the three of us got to the trailhead around 10:45PM and slept right in the parking lot. I skipped my tent and boy was that a great decision. They stars were amazing. I need to skip the tent more often. I have a warm sleeping bag and I’d rather bring a warmer bag and no tent than haul all that heavy crap up the mountain to obstruct my views of the stars.
