Mammoth Lakes, Sept. 2025

A family vacation in Mammoth Lakes. My niece, with her family and Malte, were visiting from Germany. They wanted to some hiking in the Sierra, so we decided to rent a condo in Mammoth Lakes.

Day 1:
Crystal Lake hike from Lake George.
During our evening walk a bear made an appearance near our condo.

Day 2:
Gem Lakes hike from the Mosquito Flats trailhead at the end of Rock Creek Rd.

Day 3:
Red Meadows shuttle. The Read Meadows Rd is being repaired, so for the entire season, shuttle days are limited. Currently, it only runs on Saturday and Sunday.
We got out at stop 6, Devil’s Postpile, hiked to Rainbow Falls, and took the shuttle back from stop 10, Red Meadows Resort.

Day 4:
Hike Mt. San Juaquin with Malte from the Minaret Vista Point. It started on a forest service road, and then there was a good use trail all the way to the peak.

Day 5:
A slow day around June and Gull Lakes.
In the afternoon, we planned and packed for a one-night backpack trip.

Day 6:
Hike towards Bishop Pass from South Lake. Unfortunately,Srisuda could not join us because of some foot pain.
Just below the pass, at Bishop Lake, my great niece did no longer enjoy the hiking. It was quite windy. So we found some campsites protected from the wind, sat up a tent for her and Maren. Then Malte went up to climb Mt. Agassiz while Daniel and I went up to the pass for a long down into Dusy Basin. It was very windy on the pass, and Malte reported that he could barely stand on the peak because it was so windy.

Day 7:
After a quick breakfast, mostly just something hot to drink, we hiked back to the vehicles. On the drive home, we stopped for some fall color pictures.
In the late afternoon we took a short walk at the Mammoth Lakes Earthquake Fault. It’s an impressive ditch with very limited information provided.
