Due to the Lake fire 2 years ago and the resulting closure of most of the wilderness area permits for hikes in the San Gorgonio Wilderness (SGW) are hard to get on short notice. There are only 3 open trails. So it was no wonder we did not get our first choice (San Bernardino Peak) which would have been a little cooler (more shade, north facing side of the mountain) then what we ended up with: Momyer trail and then the steep San Bernardino East Peak trail. The trail head was very busy even before 8am in the morning. We encountered a few groups along the way to the turnoff to the peak. After that we were on our own, it’s just too steep for most 😉
