We were on our way to Canyonlands NP for a mountain bike ride<\/a> along the White Rim Trail. Since it’s a long drive from SoCal we decided to take a few days on the way up and check out some of the sights along the way. The Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument has a lot of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

We drove to Kanab and stayed the night in a cabin at the newly opened “Red Canyon Cabins”. The next day we drove up the Cottonwood Canyon dirt road to Cannonville. Along the way we stopped at Grosvenor Arch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Cannonville we continued to Escalante where we stopped at the inter-agency visitor center to plan the rest of our time in the monument. After discussing some options with the ranger we got our free camping permit and headed down “Hole-in-the-rock” road for about 30 miles to the trailhead for the Dry Fork Slots hike. There are 4 slots here. 3 are very easy to get to once one descents into the canyon: Dry Fork, Peek-A-Boo (requires some climbing), Spooky. Since it was spring break the place was busy, but not many people take the longer like to Brimstone so we had that one all to ourselves. The total hike was about 8.2 miles with 700ft elevation gain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the hike we drove north on Hole-in-the-rock road and found a camping spot close to our next planned hike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
