Sugarpine, Bailey’s and Monument Mountains Aug 6, 2019

I reviewed other hikers reports for these three peaks. The total was about 9 miles, however; when I finished the loop, I had recorded over 14 miles of hiking. And I didn’t get lost. Sugarpine was not much of a peak but a nice scramble up to the top. There was an impressive 4-WD trail there and I had no idea how they were able to navigate it.
I bypassed Bailey’s Mountain to Monument Peak I have never “climbed” a peak that I had to go down 500 feet to reach the summit. Weird. It turned out to be an interesting peak however, because there was truly a monument on the peak. The monument was dedicated to Jedediah Smith who discovered this part of California in the 1800s using an old Mojave Indian trail. So, it was pretty cool to be hiking in his footsteps. On the way back I quickly bagged Bailey’s Mountain and then back to the car.
